Marina Rosenfeld: DUB PLATES, AN ARCHIVE

I’ve been creating dub plates for almost twenty-five years; as an archive, they track all of my works since the late 1990s and have been the basis for both improvised music and other works structured by the politics and aesthetics of turntablism and the material distortions of mechanical sound reproduction. As objects, the plates’ singularity and especially their fragility — their tendency to decline rapidly in fidelity the more they are played — echoes my affiliation to listening closely to material instability.

This software environment, created with technologist Caroline Record on the occasion of the exhibition Aftersound at Carnegie Mellon University, accompanied a gallery installation featuring all of the dub plates and test pressings in my collection as of September 2014. The piece was called “Turn of My Century: Dub Plates and Test Pressings, 1997-2014.” The software we created recorded and transcribed a daily program of playback enacted over the 81 days of the exhibition. The installation included a simple DJ setup and a sound system. Across the gallery a stereo microphone “listened” continuously to the room. When a gallery attendant put a record on, the software logged each “long-play”, however long or short, as a graphical spiral, registering the sum of the record’s signal and whatever ambient noise colored the room.

Played without additional manipulation, the plates — annotated in nail polish and most of them severely degraded by use and other practical interventions — delivered their devolving ratio of signal-to-noise into the gallery. Whether the pockmarked surface of the record knocked the needle out of the groove, or caught it in a temporary locked groove, the digital domain was impervious: a new spiral was added to the column.

Je crée des dub plates (ndlr : phase test dans la production de disques vinyl) depuis près de vingt-cinq ans ; elles retracent toutes mes œuvres depuis la fin des années 1990 comme un répertoire d’archive, et ont servi de base à de la musique improvisée et à d’autres œuvres structurées par la politique et l’esthétique des platines vinyles et les distorsions matérielles de la reproduction mécanique du son. En tant qu’objets, la singularité des plaques et surtout leur fragilité — leur tendance à perdre rapidement en fidélité plus elles sont jouées — font écho à mon attachement à l’écoute attentive de l’instabilité matérielle.

Cet environnement logiciel, créé avec la technologue Caroline Record à l’occasion de l’exposition Aftersound à l’université Carnegie Mellon, accompagnait une installation en galerie présentant toutes les dub plates et les pressages tests de ma collection en septembre 2014. L’œuvre s’intitulait “Turn of My Century : Dub Plates and Test Pressings, 1997-2014”. Le logiciel que nous avons créé a enregistré et transcrit un programme quotidien de lecture édicté pendant les 81 jours de l’exposition. L’installation comprenait une simple configuration DJ et un système de sonorisation. De l’autre côté de la galerie, un microphone stéréo “écoutait” en permanence la pièce. Lorsqu’une personne en train de visiter la galerie mettait un disque, le logiciel enregistrait chaque “lecture”, aussi longue ou courte soit-elle, sous la forme d’une spirale graphique, enregistrant la somme du signal du disque et du bruit ambiant qui colorait la pièce.

Jouées sans autre manipulation, les plaques — annotées au vernis à ongles et pour la plupart fortement dégradées par l’usage et d’autres interventions pratiques — livraient dans la galerie leur rapport signal/bruit en évolution. Que la surface trouée du disque ait fait sortir l’aiguille du sillon, ou qu’elle l’ait coincée dans un sillon temporairement verrouillé, le domaine numérique était inexorable : une nouvelle spirale était ajoutée à la colonne.
